1. What distinguishes between an emergency and a non-emergency?

A medical emergency is an injury or illness that is acute and poses an immediate risk to a person's life or long-term health and it's extremely important to attend to these patients immediately. Emergency case means an acute injury or acute illness that needs immediate or life-saving treatment at the Hospital.

Non-emergency cases examples are as follows:-

2. What is referral?

A medical referral is issued by an institute doctor after a physical examination at the IITH clinic.

For life-threatening emergencies, no referral from an Institute doctor is needed. Employees must submit a medical emergency certificate from the treating consultant and bills to the reimbursement section.

For Faculty/Staff living off-campus, they may visit the IITH clinic or request email referrals stating their health issues.

c) The latest prescription copy, along with a copy of the referral from an Institute doctor, must be submitted to the pharmacy.
